Solar Perspectives

Monday, April 8, 2024
11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Free Outdoor Event

Experience the Total Solar Eclipse at Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek located south of the centerline of the path through Ohio. Attend a watch party in an open lawn or view from a select spot for photographers who wish to capture beautiful images at a unique location. A representative from the Cincinnati Observatory Center will be available to discuss connections between the Piatt family and the Observatory's founding, the Observatory's role in scientific understanding of solar eclipses, and to answer questions about the country's oldest public observatory and solar eclipses.

A demonstration will be held at 11:30 and 2:00 using a six-foot model of Mac-A-Cheek Castle to show how the moon casts a shadow as it moves between the sun and the earth. It will be followed by an interactive exploration of the Solar System. Participants will discover how the land surrounding the Castle has changed since 1806 when the last Total Solar Eclipse was visible here and envision how they hope it might appear the next time this site is in the path of Totality.
